Would you like to stay at Hotel Amerika? Then it is good to know that there is a lot to see and do in Hoek van Holland and the immediate vicinity. The wide North Sea beach, for example, is a real crowd puller in all seasons: for sunbathing, walking or cycling through the dunes or enjoying the view from one of the beach pavilions.
Hoek van Holland has a rich history, especially during the war years. There are still many tangible memories of that time in the village, such as the bunkers and the Atlantic Wall museum. Even older is Fort 1881, an old armored fort that was built to protect Rotterdam from the violence of war. The three impressive gun turrets and an underground tunnel system are more than worth a visit.
The Nieuwe Waterweg with the world-famous Maeslantkering is also a must see. It is the final part of the Delta Works, intended to keep the Netherlands dry during heavy storms. Rent a bike and combine a trip along the water with a visit to the Westland with many hectares of greenhouses with vegetables and flowers. You can also find these flowers in the flower auction of Naaldwijk, where you can book a tour. Also recommended is the crossing with the fast ferry to the second Maasvlakte. Note: on the way you will pass a seal colony!
A few kilometers outside Hoek van Holland begins the Staelduinse Bos. An oasis of peace and a wonderful forest for a walk. Prefer to seek out the hustle and bustle? Around Hoek van Holland are well-known cities such as The Hague and Rotterdam with shops, museums and architecture. And for those who want to see the Holland of the past: visit the canal city of Delft. From Hoek van Holland you can plan many more fun day trips.
